Abstract
The aim of this study was to introduce Cognitive-Behavioral Group Therapy (CBGT) for schizophrenia, and evaluate its effectiveness on reducing irrational thoughts and depression of individuals with chronic schizophrenia through case studies. Two patients with schizophrenia completed a 15-session CBGT, which focused on improving social context appraisal, reducing irrational thoughts and emotional distress, and enhancing social adjustment. They were assessed prior to the start of treatment, after 8th session, after 11th session and shortly after the treatment using BDI, social adjustment scale, and irrational thoughts records. The results demonstrated that both subjects showed improvement on social adjustment and reduction in irrational thoughts and depression in stressful interpersonal situations. Although the finding should be interpreted with great caution because of methodological limitations, it showed some promise for CBGT, suggesting the need for further studies with randomized controlled trial with more subjects and extensive assessment.
